59% of Israeli adults are overweight

A new report from the National Institute for Health Policy Research, released November 21, cites disturbing data from the Israeli Health Insurance Fund database.

According to the data, about 59% of the adult population Israelis aged 20 to 64 are overweight and obese. In 2021, an unusual increase in childhood obesity was noted – 7.7% of 7-year-old children in Israel are obese, which is one percent more than in previous years.

Men are much more overweight, than women – about 39.2% of men compared to 30.1% of women. Among people aged 65 years and older, 40% of men and 30% of women are overweight.

The increase in overweight was also observed among adolescents aged 14 and 15 years. According to the data, 11.8% of young people were overweight, which is almost one percent more than in 2019 and 1.6% more than in 2017.

14-15 year olds boys of low socioeconomic status are almost twice as likely to be overweight as children of the same age with high status (15.9% compared to 8.5%), while there were smaller differences among girls.
