24 children died during the summer holidays in Israel

24 children will not return to kindergartens and schools on September 1st. According to the child safety organization Bettaram, during the months of summer vacation, these children died in accidents in the water and various traffic accidents.

This year, the statistics showed a positive trend compared to the average indicator for the past five years, which is 30 cases during the summer holidays. Despite the decrease in the total number, the organization “Bettaram” notes that the trend of increasing mortality from drowning continues.

Nine children and teenagers drowned this summer, more than the average of seven per year for the past five years.

The second leading cause of child death – traffic accidents that killed eight children. This figure is well below the five-year average of 13.

Other causes of death include falls from heights, suffocation, electric shock, and battery /injury, and the egregious case of a child left in a car who died of heatstroke.

A study of risk groups shows that a third of this year's holiday deaths are among children from Arab society, of which 13% are Bedouin children. This figure has improved from the annual average for the period 2017-2021, which is 43%.

In addition, 54% of deaths occur among ultra-Orthodox children, compared to an average of 33% over the past five years.

Of the children injured and killed in accidents, almost half (46%) were under 4 years of age. This is an increase compared to their relative share in previous years (40%). On the other hand, there has been a decrease in mortality among adolescents and they account for 9% of deaths this year compared to 26% on average over the past five years.

Orly Silvinger, CEO of Bettaram, said: “Every year we go on holiday with great hope that we will have a peaceful summer. It breaks my heart to think of the 24 families for whom this did not happen, and life will never be the same again.Children's accidents – this is not fate, and most cases could be prevented by adapting the environment for children and developing safe behavior habits. Our children's lives are the most important thing for us, and in order for us to properly protect them, we must treat children's safety as to the highest value in which to invest without cutting corners and relying on miracles.
