It’s time to fold up shop: Suprun proposes to ban advertising of medicines in Ukraine

Watching the advertising of drugs, 69% of Ukrainians self-medicate, without recourse to doctors. Such sad statistics was sounded by Suprun.

The Ministry of health has drafted a bill to restrict drug advertising. Acting Minister of health of Ukraine Ulyana Suprun said: “Advertising is a bad adviser. Especially when it is drugs, and it sees not a healthcare professional, and the man who is looking for ways easy and instant recovery.”

In the method of advertising of medicines, Ukraine lags far behind Western countries. There, unlike our state, there are clear rules and regulations that allow you to distribute information about medicines in their right context. On the Ukrainian market, the situation is chaotic – out of control.

“More than 50% of the total market consumption of medicines in 2017, the amount of drugs without proven clinical efficacy! With 10 of the most popular products that are most bought Ukrainian patients in the past year, only three drugs belong to the category of essential medicines. All the rest — symptomatic and related drugs, or those who do not have a sufficient base of effectiveness.”

Suprun reports that according to the national Council on television and radio, from 30% to 50% of the total number of advertising on Ukrainian TV — advertising of medications. This statistic is no signage in the subway, printed publications, Internet.

Now in Ukraine the advertising market regulate almost 10 different law and regulations, but in practice they do not work. This is due to the fact that there is no proper control. To resolve this problem, the Ministry of health has developed a bill that should establish a clear observation of the contents of the advertising of medicines. The main goal is to avoid manipulation of information about the drug and its properties, as well as to harmonize existing legislation with EU regulations.
