The work of 1917 sold for 157.2 million dollars.
“Reclining Nude (on the left)” Amedeo Modigliani became the most expensive painting sold to an American auction house Sotheby’s. The painting, written by an Italian artist in 1917, was sold for 157.2 million dollars, reports Rus.Media.
The entire picture set two records at Sotheby’s put it up for auction for a record starting price of 150 million dollars. Previous owner purchased it at auction in 2003 to 26.9 million is almost six times less.
However, the price of the painting at Sotheby’s did not set an absolute record for the paintings of Modigliani. In 2015, another painting from the series of Nude models sold at London auction Christie’s for 170,4 million dollars. The auction lasted only nine minutes.
The absolute record price of paintings staged in November 2017, picture of Leonardo da Vinci’s “the Savior of the world”. At Christie’s it sold for 450,3 million dollars. The bidding lasted for half an hour, the starting price of the painting was four times lower.
Modigliani painted “Reclining Nude” shortly before his death. On the website of Sotheby’s noted that the painting is the largest work by the master that he lived for 35 years.
The auction took place in new York on 14 may, the evening the auction was presented by impressionist paintings. For comparison, the Picasso painting took just over 6.9 million dollars, a painting by Claude Monet – at 20.6. The total volume of trades amounted to 318,3 million.
