DVRs have become an integral part of the car – a disputable situation on the road (and they arise in the life of almost any car owner) often can only be resolved by the presentation of the video of the incident. Many prudent owners they have saved a lot of money, time, and that may be the most important nerves. Not surprisingly, the car DVR market has grown from nothing just yeast. DVRs today are sold everywhere, and their diversity is enormous. How to choose and buy DVRs?

Why the need for a DVR?
The main objective is to help you to resolve various conflict situations on the road, provoking an accident by someone from participants of road traffic (including road surfaces), violations and compliance with traffic rules by drivers and pedestrians, record of communication with the inspectors, traffic police and other things. In all of these situations often help can only the video footage is on the road. In addition, the recorder can capture funny or funny moments, which are also often found on the roads. And users love to pay to record with the DVR in the social network and DeKastri (primarily Youtube).
Devices that can make video, now quite a lot and the actual camcorders and cameras with video capability, and finally many cell phones and almost all smartphones… Even tablets and laptops with a webcam, you can video recording. But imagine for car panels tablet or even the largest camera difficult. But the smartphone or mobile phone – please: they even special brackets are sold with the help of which they can strengthen the windshield of the car. In addition, the quality of the video, many mobile devices today are quite high, and often it is better than the actual registrars. However, shooting with a smartphone has several drawbacks, the most important of which is the interruption of recording for incoming (as well as outgoing) calls, as well as a limited amount of memory to save the videos. And if the first of these faults is still possible to fight by temporarily disabling the radio telephone (for example, to enable “offline” or “airplane”), then with limited memory, alas, can not cope. In addition, the smartphone will always have to mount-dismount, which for many is unacceptable. The main advantage of the car DVR, the principle of which is based on the cycles: when the memory is full new moves start to overwrite old ones. The data logger records the videos is not a continuous video, while relatively short (lasting from 1 to 15 minutes, depending on the model recorder and installed settings) fragments, with short pauses between the individual rollers, or even without a pause. Some registrars allow for continuous shooting, without breaks and joints, but in this case, overwriting of new video over the old happens when memory card is the recording is stopped. By the way, the logger can be combined with any other car gadget. For example, there are recorders, built-in trim vnutren the rearview mirror: on the outside they have the lens, relieving the traffic situation, and the image can be viewed on a designated sector of the mirror element. There are also DVRs, combined with radar detectors and autonomy (the latter is not to be confused with the registrars with GPS receivers and recording the motion parameters and coordinates of the machine to lay with their help, directions, or see map location will not work). You need to understand that in comparison with the specialized gadgets, any combined device is always either a compromise in one or more of its functions or you will have a corresponding (and quite high) cost. The working principle of car DVR
Almost all DVRs – including those that have their own batteries designed to work using the standard socket car cigarette lighter (only a single and relatively expensive models have the ability to connect to car’s lighter socket directly to the wiring through separate connectors or special device adapters). When power is applied (ignition on or connect the power plug to the cigarette lighter) the recorder automatically turns on and starts recording video. Loop recording as separate files for a few minutes each allow video recording during the whole car ride, however long it was, and when viewing the footage makes it quicker to find and copy the right moment. After power failure (jamming of the motor or removing power plug from the cigarette lighter socket) the recorder stops recording and turns off (with all the captured video is automatically saved on the memory card). The captured video can be viewed on the Registrar (with a special screen) and a computer or smartphone (this requires connection of the data logger or memory card to the appropriate device).
How to choose?
The spread of car DVRs in Ukraine began three years ago. But their appearance on sale in the shops had in the last year or two. And today, almost any store of electronics and car audio has quite a large selection of DVRs, so urgent was the question “What to choose?”.
when you select a Registrar today has lost its relevance, as in the sale easy to find a device for every budget – and quite expensive and more than affordable. The quality of the recording – and this is the main value of any Registrar in most cases will be in direct proportion to the cost: the cheaper the recorder, the worse the recording (it should be borne in mind that not all expensive models of recorders different is really high and the corresponding cost of each device recording quality video). Accordingly, the main criterion when choosing a Registrar
the quality of the video
. Not looking to record from another Registrar to choose the one that shoots better than others, almost impossible. And yet, on what to look for in features? First of all, the declared size and a maximum video resolution. The resolution is the aspect ratio, measured in pixels. The higher the resolution, the more detailed the frame and video quality in General. Those registrars that shoot videos in less than 1024:600 pix (so-called XGA resolution) it is no longer meet modern requirements: the best that they are able to capture the traffic situation in the afternoon, sometimes to identify the license plate at about a stand-up (!) cars, but no more. Optimally all the parameters of the HD resolution (or 720p – 1280:720 pix): clarity of identification of the state rooms at a good level, and the size of the rollers is not too large. The Full HD resolution (1920:1080 pix) provides more high-quality video, however, the size of the rollers (in megabytes to minute) becomes large enough and to write more or less long trips require more intensive and expensive memory cards.

By the way, to the declared size of the image must be treated carefully, because many inexpensive recorders, the maximum resolution is achieved not by optic and software (through image processing). These recorders are better not to consider, because
the recording quality of the processed images are always underestimated
Not worth chasing number of frames per second
(frames per second) when recording video best can be considered
30 frames (in most cases it is enough and a recording speed of 15 frames per second, but the image turns out insufficiently smooth), but the rate of 60 frames rather excessive than is really necessary. Another important factor when choosing a video
(or, more simply, type and size), as well as
how to install the logger in the car
. These two factors are related to each other. On them depends not only the usability of the Registrar, but also to some extent the safety of the driver is whether the Registrar too much to limit the review? It won’t attract attention in the empty car recorder car thieves? Is there any possibility of a quick removal of the Registrar upon completion of the trip or changes the shooting direction (for example, to rotate the logger in the driver’s side to record communication with the inspector DPS)? All you need to watch and evaluate in store, starting from the most significant factors for yourself. Most registrars have mount-suction Cup on the windshield, which allows not only to change the location of the logger in the car, but has a more flexible adjustment parameters of the installation. Some of the mounts-suction Cup suggests the possibility of fast shooting of the Registrar without removing the mount from the glass (this increases the reliability and durability of the mounting bracket to the glass), but often excludes the possibility of rotation set by the Registrar in the direction of the cabin. Mount on a special double sided tape, usually the most reliable, but it requires careful fitting prior to installation, in addition, it complicates the dismantling of the Registrar when changing a car. One way or another, but the best option when choosing a Registrar – when the seller will allow before you buy not just to study attachment in his own hands, but also allows you to try the logger directly on the car (this is not possible when buying of the Registrar via the Internet). Korean Blackvue DR400G HD II has net mne mounts to the windshield with double-sided tape With a form factor closely related to the
the number of cameras
at the Registrar. The majority of registrars has only one camera (the so-called single-channel recorders). A number of models combines in one housing two video cameras (dual logger): one for capturing traffic and one for shooting the car. The second camera, usually has some of the worst characteristics of the record (lower resolution). Finally, the separately positioned multi-channel recorders that can handle the signal with 3-4 cameras. Most of these recorders have a modular design in which the main unit is separate from the remote cameras that can be placed almost anywhere inside the vehicle. Such registrars allow almost complete circular monitoring around and inside the car, but their main disadvantage – the high cost of not only the set of the video recorder (control unit / recorder + remote camera), but the cost of installation of such Registrar in the car. You should pay attention to
of the DVR. Different recorders may have an angle from 40 ° to 150 °. The accepted norm is the angle of 120 °, which allows to cover a wide sector of the front and sides of the car. Manufacturers registrars often disingenuous and claim a corner in 120 °, which is achieved not by the width of the screen and its diagonal. Consider it a significant disadvantage is not too large angles distort the image at the edges of the frame, but also change perceptions of distance in the video (distance to the located ahead object seems bigger than it really is). Optimal should recognize the angles from 90 ° to 120 ° (for comparison: the viewing angle of the human eye is approximately 70 °).
The presence of the screen to view
video footage we would have reacted to the less important factors when choosing a Registrar. Why? The main reason is that the staff screens registrars are limited in size, seldom exceeding 3 inches, and a detailed analysis of the entries on this screen (not to mention the possibility of reading the state of the room the fugitive the scene of an accident or just a passing next to the car) most often impossible – you still need to view the recording on the computer screen or even a smartphone, where there is the possibility of increasing the image visible.
Additional options for registrars
A very important quality of the DVR – ability to record a seamless video. What is it? Above we said that the recorder records video in separate files for a few minutes. Thus between the end of one file and beginning another can be a pause for several seconds (most often associated with the need to clear space for a new file), which could be missing an important part of traffic information. Early models of the registrars almost all suffered from this deficiency (allow a pause between separate files). New registrars these delays are minimized, and the models do not exist at all. However, to test the possibility of recording seamless video is only possible in practice, it is desirable to do it with a full memory card. Another parameter that affects the usability of the recorded by the Registrar rollers –
format video compression
. There are two types of video compression: frame-by-frame and streaming. The first type (it includes formats of MJPEG, and Wavelet JPEGß2000) today is almost never used because of small effectiveness, and simple installation and edit the entry (usually a video as proof of the circumstances of the incident in the courts do not consider). Therefore, in today’s dash Cams used record streaming video with the appropriate compression algorithms. What? The most common today is the compression format
– the most advanced compression format that requires a powerful video processor and, consequently, is applied at the Registrar level not below an average-the initial and also the registrars of the top level. The registrars economy class (entry level) is more commonly used compression format
less efficient than H. 264, but presenting fewer demands on the hardware of the DVR. There is also a compression format
(used for DVD), but in camcorders, this format is almost never used. Some models of recorders have functions
(GPS logger) and G-sensor. What is it? GPS logger allows the Registrar along with the video record GPS data on the vehicle speed and its location. An interesting feature that allows you to simultaneously look at the computer screen a video recording of the travel route. However, in practice it is useless in our conditions, since the GPS module in the registers does not apply to licensed devices of control of speed and therefore his data can not be accepted in the group analysis or by the courts as evidence. As for
this option is a built-in shock sensor, triggered by a sharp nudge (for example, impact case of accident) including a function of recording information in a special “Pristine” folder on the memory card or internal memory of the recorder (this folder is generated automatically when inserting a memory card in the logger when it is first turned on). Another feature of most car DVRs –
the presence of its own batteries
: built-in or removable. Why the need for a battery in the data logger, powered from the onboard network of the car? At least in order to be able to finish and save the last video when the event of an emergency and supply interruption. But the possibility of Autonomous operation of the Registrar outside the car can also be quite useful. It should be borne in mind that some recorders use removable batteries that are interchangeable with certain models of mobile phones (e.g., Nokia): this feature can be useful in certain emergency situations. The presence of
the registrars take seriously not worth it, because the “beat” is built into the case LEDs just for two, maximum three meters, and practically on the hood of the car nothing to cover not able. Much more important factors to night video is regarded as good optics, a matrix and a processor processing the video. However, only a rather expensive model, registrars are able to provide a more or less acceptable video quality in low light urban.
What to look for when choosing a DVR
So what, in the end, worth watching if you select the DVR? Since the vast majority of car DVRs (except for some of the most expensive models) are unable to ensure the stability of quality video recording in difficult lighting conditions (dusk, weak artificial lighting or direct / reflected sunlight), you really should choose based on the characteristics of the work of registrars in the standard normal, with no sudden changes, the degree of illumination. Here, you first need to look at: –
The number of cameras
(you can choose a Registrar from one or two cameras, but also multi-channel system, allowing you to connect 3-4 cameras); –
Maximum video resolution
(optimal should recognize HD 1280:720 pix, one of the best is Full HD – 1920:1080 pix); –
(the optimal parameters are 30 fps, it should be borne in mind that the number of registrars at the highest resolution shooting speed is reduced to 15 frames per second); –
(the best are between 90 ° to 120 °); –
(selected individually, depending on vehicle features, requirements potalivo installation, the need / lack the possibility of rotating the camera as well as the characteristics of the type of fastening for the DVR and requirements); –
Maximum supported memory card capacity
(the more – the better: more than ever will be); –
The possibility of recording seamless video
(valpariaso when you purchase the option that nonetheless allows you to obtain the most complete video from the scene, without pauses and spaces). Additionally, you can pay attention to: –
The presence of the screen
(or rather helps to install and configure the logger in the car but of little use for detailed viewing of video); –
The presence of G-sensor
(useful in case of serious accidents: it helps to keep recording events regardless of the condition of the driver after the accident); –
The presence of a GPS tracker/logger
(allows you to record the route of travel, but of little use in the analysis of accidents in traffic police and courts); –
Used format video compression
(indirectly shows the level applied to the Registrar of the processor processing the captured video); –
A built-in battery
(if the alarm loses power, the Registrar must finish the entry with the save file); –
(here without comment: the appearance and Assembly at least of the housing Registrar should not be any claims). Will not be superfluous to pay attention to the make and model of the recorder. The same Registrar can be produced not only under different brands (this applies to the Chinese Registrar, which is the majority in the Ukrainian market), but with different fillings (i.e. in the same case are different cameras, processors, batteries), which may differ in its characteristics and cost. With the exception of video recorders from South Korea: these devices typically do not have direct counterparts under other brands, and are distinguished by high consumer qualities (starting with the build quality and finishing quality video – including night). However, the cost of Korean registrars above.
The main accessory of any DVR card. There are recorders that record the information on your hard disk drive 2.5″, but such are few, and more often a compact model with a slot for memory cards format SD or microSD. Most often included with the logger memory card or not, or it is indecent for such a small device memory. Accordingly, the question of the choice of a suitable stick. What to pay attention here? In the first place – to
class memory card
that determines the speed of recording and reading data. Class memory card is a direct information about the speed of her writing: for example, class 6 corresponds to a write speed of no less than 6 Mbytes / sec and class 10 is 10 MB / sec. Today, there are five classes: SD Class 2 – (writing speed not less 2 MB / s) – 13x SD Class 4 (write speed of at least 4 MB / sec) – 26х SD Class 6 (write speed at least 6 MB / sec) 40x SD Class 10 (write speed of at least 10 MB / sec) – 66х SD Class 16 – (speed of record not less than 16 MB / sec) – 106х To record video in the resolution of 1920×1080 when using compression algorithms, the speed is 24 Mbps (3 MB / sec), so nominally need a card not lower than class 4. However, tests show that the actual speed at a given resolution can reach 50 Mbps, and therefore it is desirable to use memory cards of class 6. The second important factor in choosing a memory card is its volume. It’s simple: the bigger the memory card capacity, the more information it can be recorded. It should be noted that not all registrars are able to work with memory cards of large capacity (from 32Gb and more), so before you purchase memory card, you need to clarify what is the maximum size supported by your Registrar.
