16 faces of the new garde

16 visages de la nouvelle garde artistique

We often hear, in Quebec, that this is still the same which turn, that we see in the tv, and that means… It’s less and less true. Already new artists have taken their place, and others, without any complex, arrive with their original proposals and explosive. The Sun makes you discover 16 faces of this new guard.

Marie-Pier Lagacé, actress and author

Library The Sun, Jean-Marie Villeneuve

First an actress, Marie-Pier Lagacé made a splash these days in the First Act under his new hat author… With his first play brought to the stage, The one that points the finger, the young playwright has attracted many rave reviews. And with good reason. From a about everything except the obvious — the infanticide, she was able to embroider a text range, time-sensitive, impactful, and devoid of judgment. This is according to the author, who carries herself with great aplomb and humanity the main character of the show. A graduate of the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Québec four years ago, Marie-Pier Lagacé is a part of the team Building, these development projects that are a showcase in the margin of the Carrefour international de théâtre. It has notably been able to see the play the clown to The Lined in CHSLD de Véronika Makdissi-Warren and embody the Rose and the fox in My Little Prince, a spectacle of youth still touring, signed by Anne-Marie-Olivier and Marie-Josée Bastien. On October 21, the Griendel, she will lend her voice to the evening Kamourascrap, a series of readings of texts rascals-inspired Belles-sœurs by Michel Tremblay. When we talk about diversity! Jean-François Sauvé

The young twenties and a quickdraw… Under the artist name The Praises, Vincent Roberge does not go unnoticed this fall with the release of their first full length album, The night is a panther. End mixologist of sound, the Lévisien of origin and Montreal adoption has drawn on a wealth of influences to create his cocktail singer: between studies in jazz, a love of rap and R&B and roots well anchored in the quebec song. It gives a nice freshness to the songs delivered by Roberge with a stamp singular and a flow . After having spent his adolescence playing in the streets of Old Quebec, the singer-songwriter multi-instrumentalist has made a good figure in the Francouvertes Festival, and the Festival de la chanson de Granby. Now he is at the front of the stage with a proposal which does not look like anything in the musical landscape here. To find out what wood it heats up in performance, go to The Anglican on 29 November. Geneviève Bouchard

Sophie Dupuis, director

16 visages de la nouvelle garde artistique

Archives Press, Édouard Plante-Fréchette

Sophie Dupuis is not, strictly speaking, a newcomer. Like many quebecois filmmakers, the director and screenwriter originally from Val-d’or has sharpened his gaze, honing his writing and exercised its mise en scene in the short film (half a dozen) — Fail (2012) has won numerous awards. Still, guard Dog, his first feature, has made a big splash in our cinematography. A powerful film, cry of truth, which was unanimously praised by the critics. The ultimate recognition came much later for her drama about a dysfunctional family: a watchdog is representing Canada at the Oscars in the race for the Oscar in the best feature film in a foreign language! An appointment is fully deserved for the woman, 31-year-old, who is working on his next film: Underground. We are already looking forward to it. Eric Moreault

Olivier Arteau, author, director and actor

Library The Sun, Pascal Ratthé

“I know that there are plenty of people who know its work, but there may be a part of our public that does not know it. It is this meeting that I find it beautiful”, we explained in April, the artistic director of the Trident, Anne-Marie Olivier, justifying his decision to entrust the staging of’Antigone at Olivier Arteau. The young man of the theatre will make its entry through the front door at the salle Octave-Crémazie in the next winter, after having left his mark in the First Act, among others. With Doggy in gravel (of which he was responsible for the text and the staging), it has delivered a portrait as compelling as crazy of his generation. With Made in Beautiful, he has expanded the topic to the quebec identity by exposing the creative vision unglazed, uninhibited and loud cheering. As an actor, he has notably seen last year is getting seriously bullied in Cold of Lars Norén. And we will see in November to First Act in The girl walks in with an axe by Léa Aubin and Gabriel Cloutier Tremblay. Geneviève Bouchard

There is little, Geneviève Dulude-Of Those was already a rising star of quebecois film. After his studies, the filmmaker Sorel participates in The race Escape around the world 2011 edition. And then his short cut won the Grand Prix du jury at the prestigious festival of independent cinema Sundance in 2014. Two years later, her first feature documentary, Welcome to F. L., turned to the versatile Sorel-Tracy, where she did her studies, confirmed its great potential. And then here is that the filmmaker 31-year-old continues his exploration of the turmoil of adolescence with A colony, fiction that has won the Grand Prize in the recent edition of the Festival de Québec (FCVQ)! Each time, the humanity of the subject and generates buy-in. A sensitive approach, with a nice touch, full of promise. A colony needs to take the poster in 2019. Eric Moreault

Theodore Pellerin, actor

Archives La Presse, Marco Campanozzi

Theodore Pellerin knew very young that he wanted to play. Raised by a mother, a choreographer and a father painter, he enrolled at age 12 in a secondary school specialized in theatre. He will pick soon of roles on tv, but it really is in the last year that his talent has exploded. The actor of 21 years has donned the roles at cinema (Isla Blanca, Boost , and Elsewhere, Samuel Matteau, shot in Quebec), but has amazed everyone with his incarnation incandescent of a free electron in a guard Dog by Sophie Dupuis. An interpretation which is worth the price of the revelation of the year at the gala Quebec cinema and, perhaps, a trip to the Oscars. This amazing benefit is not ephemeral: Theodore Pellerin has stalled, a week ago, the Bayard of the best actor at the Festival de Namur for Genesis. The tragedy of Philippe Lesage will be released in the spring of 2019. A ascent outstanding… Eric Moreault

Behind this name, borrowed from a brand of beer hides a funny number, which presents these days an encouraging first album. You can join or not about developed on The hiérarchill. Hard to deny the sincerity of the intentions of this colorful character, who hopes for a new quiet Revolution where the young people will recognize themselves more than in the current model. Or that praises the use of drugs: that this is a small joint at the clock or a leisurely skate on the “mush“. The author-composer-interpreter says devote an admiration equal to Richard Desjardins and Rihanna. Not easy to label the guy… And it is so much better! After having been a street musician, to be passed by the Francouvertes and Petite-Vallée, it arrives with an album that is deceptively lightweight, inherently free, and we are in doubt, clearly reflected. Even in these quotes printed in the booklet (of Plutarch to Miron passing by Ducharme and st. Augustine) which offer an interpretation key, or a highlight of his songs. To see the 9 November at the Imperial in the first part of Emile Bilodeau and on December 21 on the same stage before Hubert Lenoir. Geneviève Bouchard

Library The Sun

In 2017, the performance of Pascale Renaud-Hébert in The art of the fall, recovery this fall in Montreal, won the prix Nicky-Roy, which celebrates the excellence of the work of a comedian practicing his art for less than three years. And this is not the only piece that has smiled to the writer, director and actor, with many projects these days. In his first text, Save lives, she spoke with accuracy two ways diametrically opposite of thinking about death. First introduced in the First Act in 2016, the show will return to The Lined in February. A few days later, the re-appropriation of theAntigone of Sophocles which she signed with Rébecca Déraspe, and Annick Lefebvre will be presented at the Trident. In the First Act, she has co-authored the play The game, a reflection on the fear, and directed Taken, a piece on radicalization. In a context that is more festive, she put her claw on some texts of the year in review Beu-Bye to The Lined, and has participated in the Tales to pass the time. On the small screen, she contributes lyrics to hear Me-you, the new series of Florence Longpré what you may see on Télé-Québec in the next winter. Geneviève Bouchard

Last year, only 15 years old, the teenager made headlines by defending brilliantly the first role in the feature film by Luc Picard, The kings of the mongols, where it fomented naively the abduction of an old lady during the October Crisis in 1970. After a debut in a music video of Karkwa in 2010, she had made appearances in the short film, The Cup, The devils, Philippe Lesage and Nelly, Anne Émond, where she played the young Nelly Arcan. On tv, we were able to see in the youth series Subito Texto and events, where she plays the daughter of Isabelle Blais. Normand Provencher

Several have discovered this summer on the big screen on the go a little wacky, tasty character, in 1991 , by Ricardo Trogi. On tv, he shines this fall in the role of Robin in a wheelchair since a serious road accident, in the series Clash at the Super Screen, and from November to VRAK. Always the right tone for this character terrorized by the fear and the guilt. A actor of the new generation monitor. Richard Therrien

Marie-Fawn Belanger, visual artist

Library The Sun, Jean-Marie Villeneuve

In the visual arts, it seems that the labels “new face” and “emerging artist” apply for 10 years or more. To find the right person, so I excluded from the outset all (!) the artists that I had already devoted a section solo. My choice stops on Marie-Fauve Bélanger, dynamic, mediator, facilitator, and designer, who has co-founded the Museum, travelling with three other passionate. The initiative is a clever, stimulating, relevant, and moves in schools to introduce art to children. His artistic practice also deserves mention. His sculptures that combine curves and sharp edges are amalgams of different species of wood and plexiglas, and loads of resin. The one who also makes installations and drawings won the price ” Coup de cœur du public at the 5th Fair in the contemporary art of Quebec, the spring of last year. Josianne Desloges

Lydia Bouchard, choreographer and stage director

Olivier Samson Arcand

Definitely not voting for this master, gold of the Revolution, the flamboyant novelty of VAT. Already a beast of tv in its first experience, the choreographer and stage director transmits the magnificent way his love of the dance, alongside professionals who are equally passionate, The Twins and Jean-Marc Généreux. For his contagious energy, his eyes shining with the prowess of the dancers, she is definitely our “time Revolution” of the fall semester. Richard Therrrien

In his first foray into the feature-length film, in the beginning of the year, the director of 30-year-old native of Quebec has done stare many eyes. The fake tattoos has bribed their way up to the prestigious Berlinale film festival and at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah. This chronic sentimental low-budget, shot in only two weeks, was particularly impressed by his direction of the actors. The young director, a great fan of the cinema of John Cassavetes, guided by the master’s hand his two interpreters, Anthony Therrien and Rose-Marie Perreault, “two beads”, in a waltz-hesitation in love with plenty of charm. The future looks promising. Normand Provencher

Christophe Bernard, writer

Archives La Presse, Olivier Jean

There are in these early works that are unforgettable. Like the epic The beast hollow of Christophe Bernard. His novel, which takes place both in the Gaspé fierce, in the early 1900s, and a century later, in a trip hallucinated from Montreal to the bay of Chaleur, is simply phenomenal. It is rare that one can get carried away by so much of mastery in writing, vocabulary, and breath in the story. Somewhere between Hunter S. Thompson, Thomas Pynchon and the slapstick of the silent movies, The beast digs offers a great scenery in a landscape where the imagination is king. This first book, simply delirious, almost crazy, furious, won the Prix Québec-Ontario 2017. Bernard, born to Maria, in 1982, is certainly an author to follow. Eric Moreault

New face, Simon Boulerice? Novelist and dramatist recognized for more than 10 years, he has made a remarkable entry to tv this fall in the team of The year at Télé-Québec. A ball of energy and spontaneity, compulsive culture, which gives much life to this formula. Give it a title of a song and you sing or you dance. A UFO in our universe tv, quite pleasing.
